About the Grower
Nursery Sjaak van Schie has been around since 1980, with over 40 years of passionate cultivation. Where Sjaak van Schie once started as a carnation grower in Kwintsheul in 1980, the family business is now indispensable in the hydrangea market. They can deliver in various cultivation stages, from cuttings to the end products. Sjaak van Schie delivers year-round from locations in the Netherlands and Portugal.
Sustainability
All plants are sustainably grown with a minimum of (organic) pesticides. In the Netherlands, an ebb and flow water system is used, which filters 100% of the collected water so it can be reused. At their location in Portugal, there are solar panels covering an area of 1000m2 on the roofs, and water can also be recirculated through a water basin. Additionally, they distinguish themselves by conducting the majority of cultivation outdoors and hold certificates such as MPS GAP, SQ, Grasp, Product Proof, and ABC. The Operational Director Roel van Schie is also involved in FPC Hortensia. Each member of this group works on a theme, and Roel is linked to the theme of sustainability. Here, together with other growers, part of their research is how packaging can be made more sustainable.
