Grower of the month
Ammerlaan-Sosef
Ammerlaan-Sosef was founded in 1999 as a collaboration between Ard Ammerlaan, his son Jeffrey, and employee Gertjan Sosef. The name Ammerlaan-Sosef stems from this partnership. The company began by cultivating potted chrysanthemums and Celosia Caracas. Today, the range includes Primula Sweet Kisses, Cyclamen, and various varieties of Celosia.

What kind of company is Ammerlaan-Sosef?

Ammerlaan-Sosef is a modern pot plant nursery located in the heart of Dutch horticulture: the Westland. With craftsmanship, modern equipment, and a dedicated team, the company works daily to deliver high-quality and appealing products.
Ammerlaan-Sosef follows its own self-developed ‘FUN method’, which stands for:
FAIR – honest, reliable, and professional
UNUSUAL – doing things just a bit differently
NEVER BORING – constantly innovating and surprising

What does Ammerlaan-Sosef grow?

Ammerlaan-Sosef’s product range consists of potted plants such as Celosia ‘Deep Purple’ Caracas, Primula Sweet Kisses (Touch Me), Cyclamen, and Chrysanthemum Sollinea. The company primarily focuses on ‘smaller’ products like Celosia and Primula, in which it holds a strong market position. In addition, larger varieties such as Chrysanthemum and Cyclamen are cultivated in slightly smaller volumes.
What sets Ammerlaan-Sosef apart is its focus on distinctive shapes, striking colours, unique concepts, and consistently high quality.

Where do the young plants come from?

The cuttings for Celosia and Chrysanthemums are propagated by a Dutch company with a branch in Uganda. Thanks to the favorable climate, high-quality cuttings can be produced year-round. The cuttings for Primula and Cyclamen are supplied by a renowned grower based in the Westland region.

What is the most popular product?

The Celosia ‘Deep Purple’ in 12 cm pot size remains Ammerlaan-Sosef’s most popular product. The 19 cm pot size is also rapidly gaining in popularity. There are also high expectations for the Celosia ‘Mystic Shade’, a relatively new variety with elegant dark red foliage, which is quickly growing in popularity.

How is the Celosia cultivation process carried out?

Twice a week, Ammerlaan-Sosef receives unrooted cuttings. These are semi-automatically planted and then placed on a flood-and-drain floor by a robot. The cuttings are covered with plastic film to create a warm and humid environment — ideal for root development.

After around nine days, the film is removed (and naturally recycled), and the young plants are sufficiently rooted to continue growing independently. About ten days later, the top of the plant is pinched out, encouraging new shoots to grow from each leaf axil.

The plant is then given all the space it needs to develop fully. After approximately nine weeks, beautiful flowers have formed, and the Celosia is ready for delivery. The plants are sorted based on various characteristics to ensure uniform, high-quality batches.

What is the most challenging aspect of the cultivation process?

The greatest challenge in the process is growing without the presence of diseases and pests. In addition, it’s a constant puzzle to accurately anticipate customer demand for each variety and pot size. Demand can vary from week to week, as can the desired plant height — requiring flexibility and real expertise.

What makes Ammerlaan-Sosef exclusive?

Ammerlaan-Sosef is constantly striving to bring new varieties, forms, or plant combinations to market — in close collaboration with loyal customers. The high standard the nursery sets for itself also contributes to its uniqueness; this standard applies not only to the plant itself but also to details such as the pot label and transport.

The truly distinctive touch lies in their playful marketing approach — which at times includes a bright purple suit. It’s all perfectly in line with their own FUN method: Fair, Unusual, Never Boring.

What does Ammerlaan-Sosef do in terms of sustainability?

A great deal is being done to grow pot plants as sustainably as possible. For example, the pots are made from recycled post-consumer waste, solar panels have been installed on the nursery’s roof, and geothermal energy is used for heating. Thermal screens, optimal use of space, water recycling, and biological pest control also contribute to sustainability efforts.

Ammerlaan-Sosef also holds various certifications, including MPS-GAP and MPS-Socially Qualified, demonstrating their commitment to environmentally and socially responsible production.
