What kind of company is Amigra Grasses & More?
Amigra Grasses & More is a company based in the Westland region, specializing in the cultivation and onward sale of ornamental grasses and outdoor ferns for the high-end market. Under the product brands INTENSE and INGARDEN, the company has built up brand awareness and reliability over the years.
What does Amigra Grasses & More cultivate?
Various greenhouse locations are used to cultivate ornamental grasses and outdoor ferns. The showpiece is the Festuca glauca Intense Blue®; the bluest 'sheep's grass' available throughout Europe. In addition to the blue variety, other colours are also included in the assortment. Tip: When presented as a mix on display, you will notice a visable increase in the sales of the blue variant.
In addition to Festuca varieties, the assortment also includes Stipa, Calamagrostis Pennisetum, Imperata, evergreen outdoor ferns, and non-hardy ornamental grasses.
Where do the young plants come from and what is the cultivation process?
The outdoor ferns are propagated via spores. These come from a specialist in Aalsmeer. The ornamental grasses are largely protected by breeders' rights, meaning they cannot be produced by other companies. For this reason, the young plants of these species are divided on a separate section of the facility. They are grown into rooted cuttings and then potted into cultivation pots. The plants grow into mature plants without heating and lighting.
What is the biggest challenge in the cultivation process?
Attention and timing are the most important aspects, which is also the biggest challenge within the cultivation process. Garden plants grow along with the outdoor climate. Therefore, there are few opportunities to control the cultivation (for example, to slow down growth). The challenge is to have a good resilient plant available at the right time in the season.
What makes Amigra Grasses & More exclusive?
The quality of the plants, the appearance of the products, and the market approach are distinguishing factors. Amigra Grasses & More cultivates special garden plants, which are highly recognisable due to the light blue pot colour with corresponding label.
What are the future plans?
Amigra Grasses & More aims to continue to increase and grow healthily in the coming years, together with partners and customers. Better responding to (market) developments and further expanding the organisation are important focal points for the coming period.
What is being done with regard to sustainability?
Sustainability is an important topic. All pots are made from recycled material, and no sleeves are used. Biological crop protection is also used. For example is the use of insect screens in the air vents to keep infestations out.
Together with suppliers, they are exploring possibilities to use less peat in the potting soil. Additionally, Amigra Grasses & More holds a large number of certificates, which they are very proud of as a Company: MPS A plus, MPS SQ, MPS Gap, and On the way to PlanetProof.
