Grower of the month
Snepvangers
Snepvangers outdoor plant grower was founded in 1983 by Jan and Corrie Snepvangers. Since its foundation, Skimmia japonica has been one of the most important products in their assortment. The company celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and is now in the hands of their son Stephan Snepvangers and buisness partner Mark Boemaars.  The company grows more than 1,000,000 plants annually at a beautiful location in Molenschot in Brabant.

What do you grow?

A varied range of outdoor plants are grown on 4 hectares of greenhouse cultivation and 3 hectares of outdoor cultivation. These are largely autumn plants. At least half of the range consists of Skimmias. Various varieties of these are grown. In addition to these, the Pieris, Camellia, Leucothoe and Viburnum tinus are also grown.

What is your most popular product?

The Skimmia is the showpiece of Snepvangers. This is therefore the most cultivated plant at this grower.

What is the breeding process of the Skimmia?

The cutting season starts in July and August. These cuttings are inserted into the right soil and then rooted under foil. A Skimmia grows one length per season. Annual plants are ready for sale a year later in September, provided they have enough flowers. If a plant has too few flowers, these flowers are removed and the plant is held back and grown for another year. The larger Skimmias stay longer at the nursery, due to the yearly growth per year.

What is the most challenging in the growing process?

Skimmias are very sensitive if they receive  too much sun and water. The roots do not like standing in too much water,  but should also not be too dry. In addition, it is important that the Skimmia gives enough flowers, otherwise it cannot be sold. For this reason, the Skimmias are sorted by hand. All plants with too few flowers go back into the greenhouse.

Where do the young plants come from?

A large part of the young plants are produced by Snepvangers themselves. They cut cuttings from larger mother plants and propagate them. The other young plants are purchased from fellow growers in the Netherlands and Belgium.

What makes you exclusive?

What makes the grower unique is the wide autumn range. Where many nurseries focus on spring, they focus on autumn. In addition to Skimmias, they also grow Leucothoe and Viburmum tinus. Various autumn plants can be purchased at one address.

In addition, to the wide Skimmia range is also a USP of this grower. The range consists of various types and colours, which allows them to offer Skimmias from pot size 9.5cm up to pots size of 30 liters. In fact, they produce Skimmias in all colours and almost all sizes.

What do you do with regard to sustainability?

The nursery is committed to its plants, employees and the world around them. For example, they are always looking for ways to become more sustainable. An example of this are the flower pots are made of recycled material, which can also be added to the plastic waste. In pest control, biological solutions are used as much as possible. Snepvangers Outdoor plants is also proud of the international MPS-A standards they have.
