Grower of the month
Sjaak van Schie B.V.
The company Sjaak van Schie B.V. was founded in 1980 by Sjaak van Schie himself. In the first years, carnations were grown. Gradually, the cultivation has passed to Hydrangeas. The company now has several locations in the Netherlands and since 1999 also a location in Portugal.

What do you grow?

Sjaak van Schie B.V. specializes in growing high-quality Hydrangeas. This flowering pot plant is supplied in different cultivation stages: from cuttings to end product. The Hydrangeas range consists of indoor and garden plants.

What is the most popular Hydrangea?

Various Hydrangeas are grown at the various locations, including ball form, tellers and paniculatas. The ball form are the most popular. These are also the well-known Hydrangeas, which are also called farmer's hydrangeas. The ball form, from the Hy-pe Original line are available in the four standard colours, pink, white, red and blue. The Hy-pe Unique line contains double-coloured and discolouring Hydrangeas and species with, for example, curly petals.

How does the hydrangea cultivation process work?

The origin of the Hydrangeas lies at the cultivation location in Portugal, in Pegões. Here are the mother plants. A cutting is taken from these plants. A selection of the cuttings are sold. The other part is grown with the greatest care under ideal climate conditions. A cutting develops and is rooted. This is planted and grown into a semi-grown plant. Eventually grows and develops in to a beautiful flowering Hydrangea.

How long does the growing process take?

It takes about two years for a Hydrangea to grow into an fully grown plant. The flowering plants are  grown in Portugal. The last growing face is in the Netherlands for roughly 3 weeks.

What is the most challenging part of the growing process?

Especially the long cultivation time and all the different phases that a plant goes through are challenging. Within the two-year cultivation process, the plant is outside for most of this period. You always remain dependent on climatic conditions such as  too cold hail, to warm excess heat, frost and heavy rainfall, if this happen we need to react instantly. The customer expects a perfect product, so there is no room for error and that can make this a pretty difficult crop.

What makes you exclusive?

What is very unique is that the company has a grip on the entire chain, from mother plant and cuttings to end product. In addition, the company has Hydrangeas from its own breeding, from HiBreeding. This is a collaboration between The Mastergrowers and Sjaak van Schie B.V. New varieties are selected according to the wishes of the customer and from the market. In addition, the company has a varied range and a line of exclusive Hydrangeas, the Hy-pe Unique line.

What do you do with regard to sustainability?

Sustainable production is of paramount importance to Sjaak van Schie B.V. All plants are grown sustainably, with a minimum of crop protection products. The products used are organic as much as possible. In addition, much of the water in the nurseries is reused. The company are also a registered and has MPS certifications.
