- Grower of the month | Duijn-Hove
Duijn-Hove is a family run business where knowledge is passed down through generations. Specializing in the cultivation of foliage and flowering potted plants, quality is always the top priority. This results in a distinctive assortment with high added value.
The company operates from four locations: Phalaenopsis is grown in Maasdijk, while foliage plants are cultivated in Maasland, De Lier, and Honselersdijk.
How did Duijn-Hove originate?
The company can trace its roots back to 1951, where Arie van Duijn started a small nursery in De Lier. In 1975, Full van Duijn joined the business, followed by Martin van Duijn in 1986, after which time Arie took a step back. In 1992, Full and Martin each went their separate ways, founding Duijn-Hove and Duijnplant, respectively.
Both companies continued to grow, and Full’s sons took over Duijn-Hove. In 2023, collaboration with Duijnplant was re-established, and from 2024, Duijnplant supply Duijn-Hove customers with a wide range of foliage plants.
What does Duijn-Hove cultivate?
Duijn-Hove offers a wide assortment of foliage plants, Phalaenopsis, and added-value products. The Phalaenopsis range consists of four lines:
1. Phalaenopsis Straight – The classic Phalaenopsis, available in various colours.
2. Phalaenopsis Shapes – Duijn-Hove’s specialty, features unique designs such as Twirl, Triple Cascade, and Hurricane, available in 1-, 2-, and 3-stem versions.
3. Phalaenopsis Multiflora – Plants with lush flower spikes, creating a stunning ‘wow factor’.
4. Phalaenopsis Perfíum – A scented Multiflora Phalaenopsis with a subtle, pleasant fragrance.
Phalaenopsis Shapes are the most popular, especially when combined with ceramic pots.
Where do the young plants come from?
The young plants originate from various breeders, primarily Dutch breeders. However, some varieties also have their origins in Taiwan.
How does the Phalaenopsis cultivation process work, and what is the biggest challenge?
Young plants grow for over six months before entering a cooling phase of 17 to 19 weeks, where they develop flower spikes. Around three weeks before delivery, the plants are secured to a support cane. Once the flowers open, the plants are ready for shipment.
Maintaining and improving consistent high quality is always a challenge. Potworm can pose a risk in Phalaenopsis cultivation, with the main goal being to minimise plant loss caused by this pest.
What makes Duijn-Hove exclusive?
The diversity within the Phalaenopsis range and its high quality are Duijn-Hove’s unique selling points. Furthermore, all Phalaenopsis plants can be supplied with premium ceramic pots. This combination sets the nursery apart from competitors.
What does Duijn-Hove do in terms of sustainability?
Duijn-Hove is highly committed to sustainability. Over 350 solar panels have been installed across multiple locations, and almost all sites are equipped with LED lighting. One location is already connected to geothermal energy, with more planned for 2025 and 2026. Additionally, installations extract moisture from the air, reducing the need for gas heating, significantly lowering gas consumption.
