- Grower of the month | Bergcamp
Originally started as a vegetable and grape nursery, Bergcamp has specialised in pot plant cultivation since 1980. Under the name Bergplant, they initially grew Cyclamen and Pelargoniums. Later, the name was changed to Bergcamp.Â
Today, Bergcamp is a modern, specialised nursery with three locations in De Lier, Westland. The nursery is known for its high-quality and unique Cyclamen.
What kind of company is Bergcamp?
Like many nurseries, Bergcamp is a true family business. Currently, the second generation, Robert and Walter van den Berg, are at the helm. The brothers grew up in their father's horticultural business and followed in his footsteps after completing their studies. In addition to dedicated employees, many family members are also involved in the company.
What does Bergcamp cultivate?
Cyclamen have been a major part of Bergcamp's assortment since the 1980s, available from week 26 to week 10. The mixed variety of Cyclamen includes no fewer than 10 different colours! The most common colours are white, red, pink, and purple.
In addition to standard Cyclamen, Bergcamp also grows several exclusive varieties. These varieties are distinguished by their unique characteristics, such as hanging flowers, fringed petals, or a delightful fragrance.
Bergcamp also grows Campanulas in a 12 cm pot size, they have recently introduced the fragrant Pelargonium Fresh & Fruity to the market, and the Pelargonium Long Life has been part of the assortment for 45 years.
How does the cultivation process of Cyclamen work, and where do the young plants come from?
The bulbs (young plants) are 10 weeks old when they arrive at the nursery. They remain in the nursery for another 16 to 20 weeks to grow into beautiful, colourful mature plants. By allowing the plants to grow at a steady pace, this ensures for a higher quality plant.
All young Cyclamen plants come from a Dutch breeder, where they are bred, and the seeds are grown into young plants at a nursery.Â
What is the biggest challenge in the cultivation process?
Changing weather conditions and extreme weather can be challenging. Think of hot summer days or more humid weather in autumn. In extreme heat, the plants can grow excessively fast, or in humid conditions, they can develop mould. As a grower, you have to manage these conditions daily and monitor everything closely, which is a big challenge.
What makes Bergcamp unique?
The diverse range of Cyclamen makes the nursery unique. It offers a wide range, including special varieties. The grower's quality standards are high. These two factors together form the exclusive character of Bergcamp.
What sustainability measures does Bergcamp implement?
Bergcamp mainly grows cold crop products, requiring little energy. The heat used comes from residual heat. The water needed for the plants is stored and reused in a circular system. Additionally, waste is carefully separated and recycled, and all pots are made from recycled plastic. The nursery has several certifications, such as MPS-GAP.
