What is your most popular product?
Within the group of climbing plants, the Clematis Evision species is currently very popular. These are flowering Clematis plants, of which there are various species. One more suitable for the terrace, for example, the other does well growing against a wall. This makes the Clematis a plant that can be placed in any spot in any garden.
How does the clematis breeding process work?
The growing process starts with cuttings from the mother plant. Between two and four cuttings are cut per mother per plant. Cutting process commences in June. The cuttings are potted in April and then grown into a beautiful, strong plant. This plant is ready to be delivered the following spring. The cultivation process takes up to two to three years.
What is the most challenging part of the growing process?
Climbing plants, and therefore also the Clematis, do grow very fast. This involves a lot of labour. In addition, it is difficult to scale up or down quickly with the production of the Clematis. This is because you can only cut a maximum of two to four cuttings from each mother plant. If the grower requires to increase production, they need to increase the amount of mother plants.
Where do the young plants come from?
To complete the range of climbing plants, we work together with 20 different breeders worldwide. These young plants are bred by no less than 15 different companies in the Netherlands and abroad. Due to this, we try to make the best possible range of climbing plants available to the customer.
What makes you exclusive?
The collaboration with various breeders creates a unique range of garden plants for consumers. In this way, the grower wants to contribute to making gardens and balconies greener quicker and easier.
What do you do with regard to sustainability?
Sustainability is important to Hoogeveen Plants. In addition to all MPS certifications, the grower also has a SKAL certification for the ORGANIC fruit they grow. This means that these are grown without artificial fertilizers and chemical pesticides. With this knowledge they gain, they can pass this on to the cultivation of their other product groups.
In addition, the grower had solar panels. These are integrated into the roof. This allows them to generate their own electricity which, among other things, the heating pump run. The company also allows excess rainwater to flow into the Wadi (a natural pond). Next to the water containers there is a large space where water has the space to slowly return into the ground. This contributes to maintaining the groundwater level.
