Apartus is a family run business, with three brothers at the helm. The company started as a pepper nursery. A number of years ago they started combining this with plants. And for the past four years the full focus being on plants.
Apartus is located in Poeldijk, in the Westland area and in Berkel Rodenrijs. The production areas are spread over multiple, sustainable locations. With a total of 16 hectares of greenhouse where various pot plants are grown by a permanent team of 25 employees. In the high season, this team expands considerably.
What do you grow?
There are four different variety of plants grown at Apartus.
Pelargonium Grandiflorums, or commonly known as French geraniums, are grown at the various greenhouses. The Bella Donna, Bella Donna Angel and Bella Donna Angel Perfume series all come from our own breeding. What makes these series so special is the large or small flowers the plant produces and the special colours. In addition, these plants continue to bloom for a long period of time, allowing the consumer to enjoy them for a long time.
In addition, Apartus also grows Dahlia’s Newbiscus, which also comes from their own breeding. And Apartus also has Helianthus in pot size 23 cm. From August to March, you will find Cyclamen being grown in two pot sizes; 10.5 cm and 12 cm.
Where do the young plants come from?
The French Geraniums and Dahlias are propagated abroad and rooted in the Netherlands. The Dahlia Newbiscus comes from our own breeding and is also propagated by the grower himself.
The Bella Donna series are also breed by the grower. In our own 'plant nursery' we are constantly working on new species. It takes 7 years before a new variety to be ready and can be found in the living room!
The other young plants are supplied from various Dutch companies.
What makes you exclusive?
The high quality of the products is the grower's great 'Unique Selling Point'. The own grown varieties contribute to this high quality.
How does the cultivation process of the French Geraniums work?
What many people do not know is that the first plants are planted as early as weeks 36 and 37. These plants begin to bloom in weeks 7 and 8. This means that the cultivation takes almost 6 months. The plants are given time to grow slowly, so they form more shoots and can therefore give more flowers.
What is most challenging in the growing process?
Bringing supply and demand together. In previous years, due to the good weather often in March, there has been a high demand for French Geraniums. This year, the warmer weather is still a while away, with this result, the great demand is slightly delayed. When we have good spring weather, the demand increases again. Sell and demand is very much weather orientated. Approximately 4.000.000 plants are processed in 16 weeks in high season.
What do you do with regard to sustainability?
Apartus is constantly looking ahead in the field of sustainability. By investing in new techniques, we have succeeded in reducing energy consumption. Biological crop protection is used as much as possible. Think of the usage of insects. The plant is also given time to grow slowly, so that a stronger plant is grown that is more resistant to diseases.
In addition, the enormously sustainable project is "Geothermal Heat Vogelaer" in which geothermal energy is drilled to heat the greenhouses in a sustainable way. Apartus has been using geothermal energy for over 6 years.
